New Music Video with Grumpster!
Grumpster is one of those bands I knew I wanted to do a music video for as soon as I heard them. I reached out and was promptly replied with a yes! Right off the bat they seemed to know Roots was a song they wanted to use for their next video. Our initial reference was "Macy's Day Parade" by Green Day. I knew they wanted something dry and mundane feeling, but I still wanted it to be visually interesting enough to engage the viewers since it's a longer song.
A lot of our shots were very deliberate in choice. We knew we wanted to have Falyn singing, so we outlined exactly which shots she would be singing in, then plotted out the remaining shots based around that. I used our shot design to highlight feelings of isolation, being trapped, being out of place, and standing still. Noel and Lalo are moving in a lot of their shots, juxtaposed with Falyn who isn't moving in a lot of her shots. The shot where she moves in most is the one in which we see the Grumpster patch.
I liked the idea of using the key change at the end of the song to have the full band finally playing together in the same room. It acts as a great punctuation to a long, redundant day for everybody. They play around a single light bulb to create a sanctuarylike vibe. Their band represents a place they can all go to to get away from the mundanities of everyday life.
